Profile
Tshwaragang Hydroponics is set to mark a decade of full cucumber production in 2018. It remains the largest hydroponics enterprise to have been invested in by government in the Northern Cape and has provided the best lessons in the quest to erect more greenhouses around the province. Tshwaraganang Hydroponics mirrors the collective commitment and selflessness of community members that sought government's helping hand in extricating themselves from poverty by delving into agricultural enterprise development.
This enterprise is aptly named “Tshwaraganang” which is a Setswana word that denotes a community's resolve in unifying for a common goal. Once that common goal is attained more is set to follow.
The Department of Rural Development and Land Reform has also come on board, adding a third greenhouse structure to the 3600 square meters two-structure. This expansion will result in the planting of tomatoes apart from the current production of cucumbers only. In expanding their market foothold, the produce from Tshwaraganang Hydroponics is now likely to hit shelves in three different provinces; Northern Cape, Free State and Gauteng.
This has been the Department's first foray into hydroponics amid the consistent demands from members of the Windsorton community on the outskirts of Kimberley. It was a matter of trial and error at first until the services of experts in this specialised field were secured. Relevant training was offered to beneficiaries by a leading company onsite and at their Western Cape base, yielding results from 2008 to date.
We can assert that the management and workers of Tshwaraganang Hydroponics are well equipped, having been shown the ropes by leading Agronomist, Horticulturalist and Greenhouse Management experts. Their partnership with government is the necessary inspiration in their quest of expanding towards 14 000 sqm of greenhouses.
